AQUABATTERY accelerates clean energy innovation with a data-driven approach
We’re excited to spotlight one of the most forward-thinking players in clean energy today: AQUABATTERY, the Dutch company developing a revolutionary method of long-duration energy storage using just table salt and water.
As they scale their technology and operations, AQUABATTERY is turning to data to sharpen decision-making, speed up development, and stay ahead in the rapidly evolving energy landscape.

A circular battery built on water and salt
AQUABATTERY’s patented solution offers a radically sustainable alternative to traditional batteries. This makes AQUABATTERY not only safer and cleaner, but also geopolitically independent from critical mineral supply chains.
The way the battery stores renewable electricity is as follows. Excess electricity is fed into a membrane stack together with saltwater. The membrane stack functions as a reactor , and splits the salt water into an acid and a base solution. The acid and base are stored in separate tanks to keep the electricity contained. When the reverse process takes place, the battery discharges and generates salt water and electricity for use. Thereby completing a safe, circular, and renewable storage cycle. Being able to store more electricity in the battery means simply adding more salt water to the system.
This makes AQUABATTERY’s solution ideal for balancing the intermittency of wind and solar for periods beyond 8 hours. For example, to shift day-time solar energy to night-time use. As grids shift toward decentralized and renewable production, storage technologies like AQUABATTERY’s will be vital for maintaining stability and ensuring renewable energy is available when it’s needed most, even if the sun doesn’t shine or the wind doesn’t blow.
Their impact hasn’t gone unnoticed: AQUABATTERY recently won the 2025 EUSEW Innovation Award, affirming its potential to transform the way Europe manages energy.
Speeding up product development through smarter data use
As AQUABATTERY expands, their team is putting a stronger emphasis on using real-time operational data to guide decisions. Their engineers now rely on structured, central access to performance data to track system behavior, test refinements, and validate improvements quickly.
This shift in approach helps AQUABATTERY reduce time spent on manual reporting or dispersed monitoring set-ups. Instead, technical teams have immediate insight into how systems perform, how they evolve, and where optimization is needed.
This strategic use of data also enables a faster feedback loop: product improvements can be tested and verified quickly, reducing the time between iteration and impact. It supports not only smarter decision-making but also maximizes the value of the most critical resource in any scale-up phase - people’s time and technical expertise. It’s how AQUABATTERY translates data into progress - faster, cleaner, and smarter.
Smarter and more sustainable monitoring
Sensors don’t fully replace lab work but enable much more frequent and targeted measurements. AQUON is developing intelligent algorithms to detect unusual sensor behavior. This enables condition-based maintenance - service based on actual sensor status rather than fixed intervals. Remote control further reduces physical site visits, resulting in time savings, lower costs, and a significantly reduced environmental footprint.
Sustainability is also a factor in equipment choices. AQUON uses modular stainless steel housings designed for durability and easy relocation. Wherever possible, materials are sourced sustainably or recycled. The sensors monitor key indicators such as nitrogen, ammonium, and blue-green algae - critical parameters in the context of the nitrogen crisis, climate adaptation, and the demand for clean, reliable water.
Building the foundations for growth
To support this evolution, AQUABATTERY has put the right operational infrastructure in place: centralized monitoring and accessible dashboards that bring together technical and non-technical users. This allows the entire team to move in sync and focus on what matters most - delivering a breakthrough technology.
By combining deep scientific expertise with structured operational insight, AQUABATTERY is laying the groundwork for a future-ready energy company - one that’s built not just on vision, but on real-time learning and continuous improvement.
Looking ahead
AQUABATTERY proves that real impact comes from the intersection of bold science and operational clarity. At Blockbax, we’re proud to help turn data into action - and support their mission to power the transition with intelligence and purpose.
