Creating a property

In this guide we will briefly show you the steps to create a property on the Blockbax platform. The concept of properties can be found in our documentation. The main aim of properties is to provide additional metadata for subjects that are not received as metrics.

Let us take a look at a few examples where properties can be used to enrich your data, and your Blockbax experience. As shown in the guide below, Blockbax currently supports the following data types in properties:

Data typeExampleDescription
TextSensor manufacturerCapturing the sensor manufacturer can aid in comparisons or troubleshooting
NumberMaximum temperatureDefining a maximum temperature, this can then also be used in your triggers
LocationLocationNot all sensors send geolocation, with this you can define a property for a subject without a location metric
Map layerMap layerGreenhouses, or smart buildings may use map layers. With a map layer property you can enrich a subject with additional map information like a map layer.
ImageImageWith the image property, you can upload an image per subject to be shown on dashboards.
AreaGeofenceBy defining an area as a property, you can use this property in your trigger creation to ensure a certain subject remains within our outside the defined area.

Properties can be used in many places of the platform. You can use properties to enrich your dashboarding experience, configure advanced triggers, display subjects on a map, compare subjects and much more!

For our example below, we will aim to create a location property.

1. Navigate to "Settings"

2. Click "Properties"

3. Click to add a new property

4. Enter the name of your property, in our case we will name it "Location".

5. Select your data type. Data types currently supported are text, number, location, map layer, image and area.

6. For our example we will create a location property to capture location information.

7. Define whether you want to predefine values or not. Predefined values will allow a user to select from a list. In our case, we will not restrict values.

8. Finalize the creation by clicking on "Create property"

Congratulations, you have just created your first property.
